U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced a new version of Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification.  Employers are required to use Form I-9 to verify the identity and employment authorization of their employees.  Beginning November 1, 2023, employers must use the latest Form I-9, which was released August 1, 2023.   The current I-9 may be used through October 31st.

If you are unsure if you are using the correct form, check the date in the lower lefthand corner of the form.  The new form is dated 08/01/23; the current form is dated 10/19/2019.  There are many modifications to the new Form I-9.  Major changes are as follows:

  • “alien” is now “noncitizen”
  • a new device-friendly format is available for tablets or mobile phone
  • a 1-page form which includes only Sections 1 and 2
  • separate pages for the preparer/translator section and rehires and reverification to be used as needed
  • instructions reduced from 15 pages to 8 pages

Important: As of August 1, 2023, employers who enroll in E-Verify can remotely examine employee I-9 documents.
